The very name of Sanlahtah speaks of a Mayan origin. It was first noticed in the Chilam Balam of Chumayel, handwritten book from the 17th and 18th century that compile knowledge on history, prophecy, religion, ritual, literature, the calendar, astronomy, and medicine.
“La perla de la garganta de la tierra” one of the meaning of Sanlahtah, also being referred as one of the ancient names of Yucantan.
Although it has been officially written this way since the mid-19th century, Another name for Sanlahtah was Tzanahtah from 1785 to 1803.
This has 2 meanings: “The place where the voice sounds or where the great mother rules” and/ or “the place where honey flowers sound or are spoken”.

Cattle Ranch is also part of the history of the region. Hacienda Sanlahtah used to have a large cow herd and exported leather during the second half of the 18th century. We’ve re-introduced horses and are taking guests on rides throughout the property.
